The Story

Cement-based powder adhesive — requires mixing before use. Add approximately 6 litres of clean water per 20kg bag and mix mechanically. Need to grout the same day? See ARDEX X7 R S1 — walk on and grout after just 3 hours.
Grey or white? Choose white when fixing pale-coloured tiles, light natural stone, glass mosaics, or translucent materials where grey adhesive may show through grout joints. Both variants have identical technical performance and are priced the same.

ARDEX X7 is a standard-setting, highly flexible S1 tile adhesive for walls and floors — suitable for almost all tile types including non-moisture-sensitive natural stone, glass mosaics, ceramic, porcelain and vitrified tiles. Its slump-free consistency with high initial grab makes it particularly well suited to heavy wall tiles, reducing the need for battens and temporary supports. The exceptional 5-hour pot life gives tilers maximum working time on large or complex installations, and the product performs equally well in wet areas, swimming pools, underfloor heating systems and external locations. Classified C2 TE S1 to BS EN 12004, with tensile adhesion exceeding 1 N/mm² under all test conditions.

Preparation & mixing
1
Prepare the substrate. Surfaces must be clean, firm, free of dust, dirt, oil, grease and barriers to adhesion. Backgrounds must be flat to SR1 — no gap greater than 3mm under a 2m straight edge. Do not use below 5°C.
2
Prime the substrate where required. Gypsum plaster: ARDEX P 51 diluted 1:3 with water. Anhydrite screeds: sand and dry to ≤0.5% moisture, then ARDEX P 51 diluted 1:3 (or ARDEX R 3 E epoxy primer). Existing glazed tiles: ARDEX P 82 (internal dry) or ARDEX P 4 (external). Asphalt smooth: ARDEX P 82.
Concrete: 6 weeks minimum drying. Cement/sand screed: 3 weeks. Cement/sand render: 2 weeks.
3
Wet areas and swimming pools. Apply ARDEX WPC Waterproof Coating before tiling in showers. For swimming pools use ARDEX S 7 PLUS tanking system. For glass mosaic or porcelain/vitrified tiles in pools or external locations, add ARDEX E 90 Mortar Admix to the mix.
Glass and vitrified tiles in pools or externally require ARDEX E 90 unless tiles have extruded or keyed backs.
4
Mix. Add powder to clean water whilst stirring — approximately 2½ parts powder to 1 part water by volume. A 20kg bag requires approximately 6 litres of water. Mix to a slump-free, easily worked consistency using an ARDEX mixing paddle at slow speed.
Pot life ≈ 5 hours at 20°C. The mix must always remain slump-free — do not add excess water.
5
Underfloor heating. Suitable for concrete and cement/sand screeds with fully commissioned underfloor heating. Commission the system fully before tiling.
Fixing & finishing
6
Apply adhesive with a trowel and comb through with a suitably sized notched trowel in straight ribs. Choose notch size based on tile size, surface profile and required coverage.
Fix tiles within 20 minutes of applying adhesive for optimum performance under UK site conditions. Adjustment time up to 10 minutes.
7
Solid bed for floors, wet areas and external. Back-butter tiles immediately before placing into the ribbed bed to ensure no voids. Press with a twisting and sliding action to achieve required contact.
8
Wall tiles. For dry internal locations maximum practical contact should be achieved. Tiles weighing more than 70% of the background's load capacity per m² should be solidly bedded. Tiles over 0.1m² should always be solidly bedded.
9
Movement joints. Install to BS 5385 Parts 1–5 at all perimeters, internal corners and regular intervals across large areas.
10
Grout. Allow 8 hours (walls) or 24 hours (floors) at 20°C before grouting. Use ARDEX-FLEX FL, ARDEX-FLEX FS or ARDEX EG 18 PLUS epoxy grout where chemical resistance is required.
Higher temperatures shorten, lower temperatures extend these times.
