The Story

Cement-based powder adhesive — requires mixing before use. Add approximately 5.4 litres of clean cold water per 20kg bag and mix mechanically. Need to grout the same day? See BAL Rapid-Flex One — grout after just 3 hours.

BAL Flex One is a standard-setting, highly polymer-modified S1 flexible tile adhesive for walls and floors — enhanced with BAL's FST (Fibre Strand Technology) for improved flexibility and bond strength. Its thixotropic, fluid formula with shape memory holds tiles firmly without slipping while remaining easy to work with, and its extended 45-minute open time and 2½-hour pot life make it well suited to large areas, intricate set-outs, and jobs where working time matters. Suitable for most natural stone including moisture-sensitive varieties, large format tiles up to 300×300mm and beyond on walls, swimming pools, underfloor heating, and virtually every substrate type — including timber floors via backer board. Backed by BAL's 25-year product guarantee.

Preparation & mixing
1
Prepare the substrate. Surfaces must be flat (SR1), clean, dry, sound and free from contamination, dust, grease, and barriers to adhesion. Do not use below 5°C or in damp conditions.
2
Prime the substrate. Plaster and plasterboard: 2 coats BAL Prime APD undiluted (second coat at 90° to first), allow each coat to dry. Anhydrite screeds: mechanically abrade, then 2 coats BAL Prime APD — 1st coat 1:1 diluted, 2nd coat undiluted. Concrete/rendering: BAL Prime APD or BAL Bond SBR.
Plaster: max tile weight 20kg/m². Plasterboard: max 32kg/m².
3
Underfloor heating. For heated sand/cement screeds use in conjunction with a BAL uncoupling mat. For electrical undertile heating: modify with BAL Admix AD1 diluted 1:1 with water.
Check manufacturer compatibility before tiling over any heating system.
4
Mix. Add ≈ 5.4 litres of clean cold water to a BAL mixing bucket. Add powder gradually at approximately 3.5–4 parts powder to 1 part water by weight. Mix until lump-free. Allow to stand for 2 minutes then remix for 30 seconds. Use slow speed drill (under 300rpm).
Pot life ≈ 2½ hours at 20°C. Never add more water than recommended.
5
Wet areas. Waterproof with BAL Tank-It or BAL Waterproof 1C before tiling. For swimming pools the background must be fully watertight.
Fixing & finishing
6
Apply adhesive using a notched trowel, combing ribs in one direction. Bed thickness 2–8mm typical, up to 15mm in localised areas only (max 0.5m²).
Dry walls (up to 300×300mm): 6mm notch. Wet walls: 6mm solid bed. Floors/external: 10mm solid bed. Mosaics: 4mm notch. Large format (>600×600mm): 20mm notch.
7
Back-butter large format tiles and any heavily patterned tiles with a thin layer of adhesive to ensure solid bedding. For solid-bed applications leave no voids behind tiles.
8
Fix tiles before skin forms — typically within 45 minutes at 20°C. Press firmly with a slight twisting action. If skin has formed, remove adhesive and apply a fresh layer. Do not add water to adhesive that has started to set.
Discard any adhesive that has begun to set — do not rewet.
9
Movement joints. Install to BS 5385 Parts 1–5 at all perimeters, internal corners and regular intervals. Fill with BAL Micromax Silicone Sealant — not grout.
10
Grout. Wait minimum 16 hours at 20°C before grouting. Use BAL Micromax3 Eco Grout or BAL Absolute Grout. Clean surplus adhesive from tile faces before it dries.
Swimming pools: do not fill for at least 3 weeks after grouting. Showers: do not use for at least 2 weeks after grouting.
