Grey or white? Choose white when fixing pale-coloured tiles, light natural stone, glass mosaics, or translucent tiles where grey adhesive may show through grout joints. Both variants have identical technical performance — the white version is slightly higher priced. Both carry EMICODE EC1 Plus certification for very low VOC emissions.
H40 Gel is Kerakoll's standard-setting multipurpose Gel-Adhesive — a cement-based S1 flexible adhesive with an exceptionally long open time of 60 minutes and a 4-hour pot life that gives tilers real working time on site. Its unique thixotropic and fluid formula holds tiles firmly with no vertical slip while remaining easy to comb and adjust, making it equally well suited to walls and floors, standard formats and large-format slabs up to 300×150 cm. Tested across 20 mechanical, 50 thermal and 50 freeze-thaw stress cycles using Kerakoll's SAS method, it is built for installations that need to last.

How to mix and apply this adhesive Priming · mixing · setting out · fixing · grouting
Mixing & preparation

Prepare the substrate. Surfaces must be level, cured, undamaged, compact, rigid and dry. Remove dust, grease and any debonding agents.
Plaster and render: allow 4 weeks to cure. Anhydrite screeds: residual humidity ≤ 0.5 CM-%. Cement screeds: ≤ 2 CM-%.

Prime the substrate. Porous substrates (cement render, plasterboard, brick, screeds): Primeplus diluted 3:1, coverage ≈ 40 m²/kg. Anhydrite: 1st coat 3:1, 2nd coat undiluted at 8 m²/kg. Existing tiles, timber, asphalt: Prime+ Grip undiluted at 10 m²/kg. Allow primer to dry fully before tiling.

Underfloor heating. Commission the system before tiling. Keep temperature at max 15°C during installation and for 7 days after. Then raise by 5°C per day to operating temperature.
Do not exceed 15°C during installation.

Mix. Add water to a clean bucket first, then add powder gradually. Grey: ≈ 4.5–5.7 litres per 20 kg bag. White: ≈ 5.1–6.6 litres per 20 kg bag. Mix mechanically until smooth. Do not remix once the adhesive begins to set.
Pot life ≈ 4 hours at 23°C — mix only what you can use within this time.

Set out. Mark a horizontal datum line and find the vertical centre before mixing. Dry-lay tiles to check cut sizes at edges.
Fixing & finishing

Apply adhesive in sections of approx. 1 m² using a notched trowel. Comb in one direction.
6mm notch for wall tiles. 10–12mm notch for floor tiles and large formats.
Do not fix tiles once a skin has formed on the adhesive surface.

Solid bed for floors and exterior. Butter the back of each tile as well as the substrate. Minimum coverage: 65–70% on dry internal walls, 100% on floors, wet areas and all external surfaces.

Fix tiles. Press with a twisting action and tap level. Adjust within the open time. Remove surplus adhesive from joints promptly with a damp cloth. Check a tile periodically to confirm full back coverage.

Movement joints. Leave at all perimeters, internal corners and changes of material. Internal: every 100 m². With UFH: every 40 m². External: every 10 m². Fill with silicone sealant, not grout.

Grout. Allow ≈ 16 hours on floors and ≈ 12 hours on walls at 23°C before grouting. In wet rooms and on impervious backgrounds, wait 3 days. Use silicone at all junctions and movement joints.
Swimming pools: wait 14 days before filling.
